Is a Turkish Towel a Towel?
My friend refuses to call these beautiful soft cotton Turkish Towel a towel! I guess she envisions a towel something hung in the bathroom to try ourselves after a shower or bath. She is not wrong about that. These towels serve that purpose as well with their 3’ x 6 ‘dimension (that will wrap around any body) and their super absorbancy. Isabelle prefers to use them as a table runner or decorative throw on her couch as they are so beautiful(she says). The most common use we find is as a pashmina, a wrap to keep you warm on the cool spring and fall nights on your patio, or a throw on your day couch for your afternoon nap. Seniors love them as they are not heavy and are easily draped over their shoulders if sitting in a wheelchair.
The only thing that can keep me warm like my soft puppy is a soft Turkish Towel. I take it on all my international travel. The large size is perfect to cozy up in when one needs to sleep on the plane.
Near the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul we stumbled upon as small Turkish Towel shop with these towels sourced from his workshop in Eastern Turkiye. This workshop was heavily damaged in the Feb,2023 Earthquake in Turkiye and Syria so we took it upon ourselves to donate $5 from every Turkish Towel we sold to help with the repair of their shop.
Habib has a family business! The first time we visited him, his grandmother was tying the little tassels at the ends of the towels and his son was learning the trade in this shop. If we are running low on towels all it takes is a quick whatsapp exchange of photos to put together an order.
Turkish Towels have a reputation! Perhaps it is the cute tassels on the edges, but probably because of the soft turkish cotton which makes them super absorbant! You will find our designs and colours on our online sales platform www.thefunkyoldmedina.ca
